GEC's 20th Anniversary

Year 2018 marks our 20 years of building partnership for the environment.

It also marks two decades of GEC’s accomplishments.

We are growing stronger and reaching further, working strategically side by side with the governments, NGOs, corporate partners and local communities for the betterment of our environment.

Faizal Parish
Founder and Director of GEC

GEC was established in 1998 in Malaysia to work on environmental issues of global importance. The Centre is registered as a non-profit organisation but works regionally and internationally both directly and through many partners. GEC supports information exchange and capacity building as well as undertakes strategic projects particularly in developing countries. It works in partnership with other like-minded agencies worldwide.

Support and commitment given by funders and partners of GEC has enabled GEC to continue to advocate for protection, rehabilitation and sustainable use of forests, mangroves, peatlands and rivers with a key focus on community involvement and biodiversity conservation as well as education empowerment awareness and capacity building with various organisations, sectors and the public.

Significant achievements have been made despite many challenges lie ahead in conserving and protecting the environment and natural resources. Below are selected achivements accomplished since 1998:

GEC 20th ANNIVERSARY FORUM

GEC has been working for 20 years with different partners and stakeholders in natural resources and environmental protection and conservation in Malaysia and globally. In conjunction with its 20th anniversary, GEC has organised a forum entitled “Building Partnership for the Environment” to bring together different stakeholders to share experiences and success stories in multi-stakeholder management of natural resources with the following objectives:
•    To showcase multi-stakeholder partnership in the environment and natural resource conservation;
•    To bring together GEC’s partner/supporters, communities and media to share experience and success stories in the environment and natural resource conservation; and
•    To raise awareness on the role and importance of engagement of different stakeholders in environment and natural resource conservation.

The Forum was held on April 23, 2019, at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) and has gathered more than 100 participants from the government, private sector, community and civil society, to share experiences, challenges and success stories on multi-stakeholder engagement and partnership in natural resources management.

Among the topics that were discussed is sustainable management of peatland, river, water, forest and coastal resources through active partnerships with various stakeholders including companies, government agencies, community-based organisations, universities and local communities.
