The Irish National Committee of the International Peat Society and the Irish Peat Society would like to extend to all participants in the 2008 Peat Congress the traditional Irish one hundred thousand welcomes. We look forward to welcoming you most sincerely to the Congress in June 2008. It will take place in two charming towns, Tullamore and Athlone, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The location of the Congress is in the heart of Ireland’s midland peatlands and in an area of traditional culture and heritage.
Every four years, through its Congress, the International Peat Society provides an opportunity for peatland and peat scientists and practitioners to share knowledge and experience with the wider peatland family. It also provides opportunities for personal interaction, informal meetings and exchanges of view, and to see the faces behind the e-mails of the previous four years.
The purpose of this Second Circular is to stimulate your interest in attending the Tullamore Congress. It is also the Call for Papers which hopefully will cause you to set out on paper the results of your recent research and work so that it will be with us by 30th September 2007. The Scientific Committee is hoping for a large number of high-quality papers and posters outlining the latest research and practice.
We hope the Congress will be a forward-looking event, showcasing state-of-the-art research on all aspects of peat and peatlands, and seeking to look to the future of peatland conservation, utilisation and restoration. Its theme ‘After Wise Use – the Future of Peatlands’ is meant to take the debate on peat and peatlands forward from the 12th Congress whose theme was ‘Wise Use of Peatlands’.
We look forward to seeing you at what we think will be a stimulating and enjoyable week. 2008 will mark the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the I.P.S. and we hope to celebrate the occasion appropriately.
