Sungai Perak is the 3rd longest river in Peninsular Malaysia. It serves as a means of transport and livelihood to the many people who live by the river. However, lack of management and improper use of resources has led to the degradation of the ecosystem and highlighted the need for an integrated river basin management system.
Early action was taken by Her Majesty Raja Puan Muda of Perak, Her Royal Highness YM Tuanku Raja Nor Mahani, whose genuine interest and concern for Sungai Perak prompted her to write and produce a book called 'Silver Waters', which will capture the true essence of Sungai Perak and what is envisioned for its future. This was supported by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, other State agencies, individuals and NGO's in the like of Global Environment Centre.
With such support, two expeditions were organized to help gather the information that will form the basis for the proposed book. The first expedition involved a two-week forest camp at the upper reaches of Sungai Perak, within the Royal Belum State Park, and the second expedition was one-week excursion along the rest of Sungai Perak from Banding Island to Pantai Beras Basah.
