Figure 1. Pie chart of IWM and 4R2C relevance.
4R2C
Designed by GEC, 4R 2C is a concept that refers to a certain phase of the overall Integrated Waste Management (IWM) system – this means that if the IWM is considered a pie, 4R2C is merely a small piece of it.  Even though 4R2C only covers a small part of the whole system, it is actually the most important part because it changes our current waste management habits and determines the quality and quantity of waste generated at source level. It will also directly have an impact on how the IWM is going to be implemented, particularly on the selection of waste disposal methods (i.e. landfill or incinerator or both methods).

4R 2C concept advocates a zero waste system. It is a concept that makes you an environmentally wise consumer (Rethink) via waste prevention and minimization (Reduce), reusing waste (Reuse), and maximizing recycling (Recycle). It is also a concept that ensures waste is recycled back to nature (Compost) and placed back to its market place (Close the loop).

The key function of this zero waste system is to prevent or minimize the amount of waste generated. For wastes that still continue to be produced, then the next step is to recycle for inorganic waste and compost for organic waste. The final step is close the loop by supporting new products made from recyclables.

How does 4R 2C help the environment?

  • Reduces energy consumption
  • Increases carbon uptake by forest
  • Reduces the need for more landfills and incinerators
