SEACSEA is an interim network of NGOs in the ASEAN region. The network was formed during a 3-day workshop in Kuala Lumpur on May 2-4, 2007, which was initiated and supported by GEC, ASEAN Secretariat, USAID and Hanns Seidel Foundation. The aim of the workshop was to provide a platform to share experiences and lessons learned, and to develop mechanisms for more formal and regular interaction, collaboration and consultation among ASEAN CSOs and between CSOs and the ASEAN intergovernmental bodies on promoting environmental protection and sustainable development.
Recently
The 1st Southeast Asia Civil Society Environmental Alliance (SEACSEA) Country Focal Point Meeting was held on 25-27 October 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Forum was organised by Global Environment Centre (GEC) which is the Interim SEACSEA Secretariat. This meeting was supported jointly by GEC and British High Commission in Malaysia in conjunction with the Regional Conference on Climate Change (29 Oct – Nov 1, 07) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting focused on finalizing the SEACSEA Constitution as well as other mattes related to the formation and running of the network.
The future
GEC is currently trying to consolidate all comments provided by the focal points into the final Constitution document. This document will then be sent to ASEAN Secretariat for formal recognition, and upon receiving accreditation from ASEAN, the name of this network shall be changed to ASEAN Civil Society Environment Alliance (ACSEA).
The network will then function as a 'central' NGO hub in the ASEAN region and act as an independent single voice for NGOs. It will help to obtain funds for projects and facilitate networking and communication between NGOs.
