The project proposes to introduce and implement a river auditing and flood awareness programme in the flood areas of Pagoh, Johor. It is aimed to enhance local people’s understanding on the issue, train them to monitor their river and build their capacity to enable them to contribute to the decision making process in the future.

Goal

To enhance understanding and knowledge on river ecology and hydrology and root causes and adaptation options to flooding among key stakeholders to help them manage risks of floods to people, property and environment by concerted, coordinated action at river basin level.

Objectives

1. To understand better the root causes of the flood situation in Pagoh Johor
2. To provide information and understanding on river ecology, river basin and flood phenomenon to communities so that they can better cope with the situation.
3. To increase local communities’ capacity to assess the situation, monitor changes and inform the authority of their concerns.

Expected Outcomes

• Increased understanding among community members on river and river basins and awareness on causes of floods especially those induced by human activities.
• Community are better informed and prepared in future flood events
• Community groups acquired the skills to assess and monitor river hydrology and river basin changes
• The importance of sustainable land use practices highlighted and promoted
• Understanding of River basin planning local river rehabilitation and flood mitigation activities enhanced
• Improved cooperation and coordination between local communities and stakeholders through joint river assessment and development of local flood management plans.
• Mechanism for information sharing between the community and the authorities initiated
