  About SMART Rangers Project

About the Project
SMART Rangers is an environmental education program which has been designed for school communities to learn about the environment, particularly focusing on natural and non natural resource management. It initially began with a focus on solid waste management and rivers, and was later developed into a full fledged program by itself.

GEC saw the potential of proper solid waste management education for school children, and proceeded to tailor a program that would train and educate students to manage and reduce the waste that is produced by them.

This comprehensive program is a way to create awareness on the importance of recycling and reusing their waste, and further empower them to take action on their own. The basis of this program follows the concept of “Civic Science”, and the 4R 2C Concept (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Compost and Close the loop). The Global Environment Centre is the first organization to use this approach.

Civic Science is the process of bringing thoughts and issues from one’s mind into the heart. This is done by a simple method of enhancing awareness, providing the knowledge, and most importantly, the skills required to take action proactively on environmental matters.

About DANIDA
The Government of Malaysia in 2005 endorsed the National Strategic Plan for Solid Waste Management (NSP) and enacted the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act (SWMPC Act) in August 2007.

In February 2006, the Government of Malaysia and the Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) initiated the Solid Waste Management Component (SWMC) project to support the implementation of the NSP and the SWMPC Act.

The SWMC is implemented by the Department of National Solid Waste Management, Ministry of Housing and Local Government , assisted by the Danida.

The objectives of the SWMC are equal to the objectives of the NSP:

“An efficient, cost effective and sustainable Solid Waste Management system to safeguard public health and the environment and to enhance the quality of life in Malaysia by 2020”

The project has two main components:

  • Increasing the legal, institutional and human capacity at federal, state and local level to implement the NSP and the SWMPC Act.
  • Facilitating and institutionalizing public participation in Solid Waste Management at federal, state and local level.

About GEC

The biological diversity of life on Earth, is commonly referred to as Biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth.

Appropriate conservation with sustainable development strategies are important to harmonize this. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature. Yet, power and greed have affected the precarious balance, leading towards the greatest threat facing the planet, climate change!

There’s a large gap in between and the birth of Global Environment Centre is to build partnership to bridge the gap between two bookends.

GEC is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that is built to support the protection of the environment and sustainable use of the natural resources to meet local, regional and global needs through strategic partnerships.

We are focused on bringing together all the parties—individuals, communities, corporations and other like-minded organizations—to help foster lasting change for environmental benefits.

The ultimate dream of GEC is to be able to play an integral role in shaping the future and deliver the future that will sustain.  We're passionate not only about what we do, but how we do it!

GEC has been a strong voice for the environment through the series of core programs we developed:

  • River Care Program
  • Forest Program
  • Peatland Program
  • Capacity Building and Awareness Program

We have proven track records to our works that has been recognized locally and internationally.

Currently, GEC takes the lead in educating communities and schools about solid waste management through the environment education programme, SMART Rangers.
