Greetings everyone! We’ve finally managed to get ourselves together to produce GEC’s first-ever monthly newsletter to help us keep connected with you! In keeping with our motto ‘building partnerships for the environment’ - our newsletters will keep you updated about our activities and events and how YOU can play a part.
 

     
Upcoming Highlights    
     

Tree planting every Saturday!
We're currently working on a large-scale rehabilitation project of the Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR) in Batang Berjuntai. If you have a Saturday morning to spare, come and join us and get a first-hand experience of a peat swamp forest! The June planting dates are June 5, 12, 19 and 26.

On June 12, we will be having a major tree planting event, in lieu of World Environment Day, with Eco Warriors, Sai Council and the Forestry Department. We plan on planting up to 3000 marcots. Read more about the RMFR and our weekly tree planting activities >>

 
     

     

World Environment Day Celebrations
Sahabat Sungai Nenggiri (SSN) or Friends of Nenggiri River will be celebrating World Environment Day at Pos Tohoi and Pos Pulat in Gua Musang, Kelantan with a school children colouring competition, community tree planting activity, as well as a showcase of local indigenous (Temiar Asli) cultural activities including sampling of local delicacies, learning the Sewang dance and a handicraft exhibition.

   
     

     

MENGO Green Hunt!
Love treasure hunts? Well, MENGO is organising a Green Hunt on 26th June 2010 in the Klang Valley promoting the use of public transport and sustainable living concepts! All materials used and consumed during the Hunt and leading to the event will have minimum packaging and recycling will be practised! You need 4 members in a team and it will cost RM50 per person, but there's over RM20,000 worth of prizes to be won so what're you waiting for? Sign up today!

 
     

     

A River Carnival to mark success!
The W.A.T.E.R. Project is in its third year and is going very well. The local community is now taking responsibility for Sungai Way and manages a River Education Centre and Community Composting Centre. On June 27, a River Carnival will be organized to celebrate and showcase the project's success and engage the wider community. Read more about the project >>

 
     

     
Development of the ASEAN Peatland Fire Prediction and Warning System
A Technical Meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur from July 13-14 to deliberate on the design and development of a peatland fire prediction and warning system that could be used in the ASEAN region. This Meeting is being organized by the ASEAN Secretariat and GEC in collaboration with the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ACMS), Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) and will focus on integrating the different systems currently being used or developed by regional countries. Our beautiful open classroom at the source of Sungai Pencala finally got a facelift! Restoration works included habitat creation, tree planting and bank stabilisation. The works ended with a celebration in conjunction with World Biodiversity Day to promote the river's importance.

SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD WORKSHOP
3-7 MAY 2010
The Sustainable Livelihood Workshop was organized in Kuala Gula, Perak to educate local community fisherfolk, related government agencies and conservation organisations about sustainable livelihood activities, through a series of hands-on activities and workshops.

17 MAY 2010
Bridgestone organized a series of charity drives that were part of their ‘Make Cars Green’ initiative to help raise public awareness about green motoring. A total of RM110,820 was raised and donated to GEC during a cheque presentation ceremony at Bukit Kiara Forest Reserve.
