June was a busy month for us! World Environment Day was on June 5th and GEC was so excited that we celebrated it twice! We had a celebration with the local Temiar Asli in Kelantan on June 5th and another celebration at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve on June 12th with our dedicated volunteers, Eco Warriors, Forestry Department and the Sathya Sai Council.

World Environment Day Celebrations
Sahabat Sungai Nenggiri (SSN) or Friends of Nenggiri River celebrated World Environment Day at Pos Tohoi and Pos Pulat in Gua Musang, Kelantan with a school children colouring competition, community tree planting activity, as well as a showcase of local indigenous (Temiar Asli) cultural activities.

Mangrove Planting with UM Students
A bunch of UM students joined us in Kuala Gula from 15-16 June to plant 900 Rhizophora Apiculata seedlings in Teluk Rubiah. They also attended a talk by Perhilitan and GEC about mangrove ecosystems and its important biodiversity. GEC's intern from UNIMAS joined in the activities and shared his experiences with us.

GEF-CSO Consultations
The GEF-CSO Consultation Meeting was held in Washington DC at the World Bank Building and was attended by 20 members of the GEF NGO Network. The meeting was held just before the 38th GEF Council Meeting (29 June - 1 July) to discuss some of the key reforms for the new phase of GEF Funding (GEF 5).

Opening of the Hangzhou Bay Wetland Centre
It was an all-out affair at the Opening Ceremony of the Hangzhou Bay Wetlands Centre in Cixi City, China on June 18! After 3 years of hard work, the Centre is finally open to the public and serves as an educational centre and important habitat for migratory birds.

Development of the ASEAN Peatland Fire Prediction and Warning System
A Technical Meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur from July 13-14 to deliberate on the design and development of a peatland fire prediction and warning system that could be used in the ASEAN region.

1 State, 1 River - RIVER Ranger Training
GEC will be heading to Penang from July 20-21 to train students and teachers from 10 schools about rivers and water quality monitoring as part of the 1 State, 1 River Programme by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

  A River Carnival to mark success!
On July 18, a River Carnival will be organized to celebrate and showcase the W.A.T.E.R. Project's success and engage the wider community. There will be loads of games, exhibitions and prizes for everyone!
