Greetings everyone! We are coming close to the end of 2011. Some of us may already start planning for next year and some of us may frenziedly try to catch up on datelines before 2011 ends. In GEC, while we have our ups and downs, one thing remains strongly for sure - our persistent focus and effort to preserve the environment through our awareness and outreach work. In this quarter newsletter, we bring you several stories to share and a list of upcoming activities in which we encourage you to participate. Happy reading :)

Friends of Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest (Sahabat Hutan Paya Gambut Raja Musa)
|
Tahir Johari – 62 years old and Yusuf Kasim – 76 years old. These are elderly people, right? Normally, at these age they are apt to be sitting at home, resting and taking care of their grandchildren. We the “younger” ones, typically assume that people at this age are not able to contribute much since they in an old age group. But this is not so for Tahir Johari (Pak Cik Tahir) and Yusuf Kasim (Pak Cik Yusuf). They are among the ten core volunteers that registered themselves to be Friends of Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest and without fail, they participated in every rehabilitation activities in the peat swamp forest (PSF) organised by us. SK Sungei Way Celebrates 2011 World Rivers Day with Mobile River Care Unit

Rivers Day 2011 was a great success! Millions of peoples from around the world including students and school children celebrated their local rivers waterways on this day. Malaysia as one of the countries supporting the global environmental event also celebrated the event but in more unique ways; through educational and awareness programme with the school children’s in Selangor. One the the participated school was Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg. Way (Primary School); located not far from the W.A.T.E.R Project Rehabilitation Programme demonstration site. The school is one of the schools being chosen by the W.A.T.E.R Project Mobile River Care Unit programme. Read more >>

Efforts to revive Raja Musa Forest Reserve continues
|
Initiated in 2008, the Raja Musa Community based Rehabilittaion Programme continues to get enormous support from Malaysians. Recently, Timberland Malaysia and Sunway University lend their helping hands by planting 100 seedings and 130 seedlings respectively. They also helped in two canals blocking.

1Malaysia Roundtable Discussion: Finding a balance between development and environmental preservation

The 1Malaysia website recently discussed a topic related to our Environment. Entitled “Finding a balance between development and environmental preservation”, the discussion was moderated by GEC’s Director - Mr Faizal Parish and MSN’s President - Dr. Maketab Mohamed. Many Malaysians gave their inputs and perspectives. Among the subjects discussed were implementation of environmental regulations and policies, environmental education and environmental awareness. We are seeking professional volunteer photographer to capture captivating images on Raja Musa Forest Reserve (Peat Swamp Forest).
The chosen photographs will be used in our publications which aim to raise awareness on the importance of Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest and to encourage more people to participate in the forest rehabilitation activities.
