HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad supports reviving of the green lung of North Selangor PSF
The Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest Reserve covers approximately 23,000ha and is a part of North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest – which is the largest peat swamp forest complex in Selangor. Unfortunately, parts of 1,000ha of the Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest Reserve has been encroached and degraded due to illegal clearing and burning for farming activities and has caused major environmental hazards such as haze and forest fire. Clearing and fires have also released thousands of tonnes of greenhouses gases, which contribute to global warming.
In 2011, a partnership was established between GEC and HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad to revive the North Selangor PSF through rehabilitation activity in Raja Musa Forest Reserve, outreaching local communities to participate in rehabilitation activity and raise awareness of peatland conservation through environmental education activity targeted for younger generation.
To date, HSBC volunteers together with local community have planted 400 peat swamp tree seedlings.

About the project
|
|
What are the aims of the project?
The main target of the project is to promote community ownership and participation in forest rehabilitation work at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve. The aim is to raise awareness on the importance of peat swamp forest conservation within the community, but most importantly the younger generation and effectively communicate the importance of the North Selangor Peat Swamp forest to the general public.
What are the expected results?
- A community action group is established to facilitate the rehabilitation activities of Raja Musa Forest Reserve;
- An Information Centre is established to promote community linkages and cooperation;
- Tree nurseries are established to support forest rehabilitation in 7 hectares of the degraded land. The nurseries also provide a source of alternative and sustainable income to the community;
- The Forest Ranger Programme is introduced in schools around the Raja Musa Forest Reserve; and
- The importance of North Selangor Peat Swamp forest conservation is highlighted in GEC's peat portal and is linked to HSBC's and schools' websites
