Greetings everyone!It has been a busy month for us! What about yours? August is the Ramadhan month for the Muslims and of course, it is time for Ramadhan Bazaar for everyone! Stalls and bazaars sprout everywhere, offering us an array of delicious Malaysian food, but remember to play your part in conserving the environment by bringing your own container to pack food and do not waste food. GEC would like to take this opportunity to wish all Muslims Happy Ramadhan and we can't wait to come back in full force in the third quarter of the year - ready to do some wonderful things for the good of the environment!

Rehabilitating Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest is more than just planting trees...
|
A barren land occupied by lalang – that used to be Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest Reserve. Now, Raja Musa Forest Reserve (RMFR) is reviving and restoring its ecology and biodiversity since the inception of community based rehabilitation programme by GEC and Selangor State Forestry Department in 2009. The programme was the first of its kind in Malaysia in which public/volunteers are invited to participate in the rehabilitation activities in a forest reserve. The response was great as hundreds of volunteers participated in the rehabilitation activity. Read more >>

Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) Programme takes on new challenges

Last year programme was the battle of the eco champion. This year in reducing environmental impact it goes beyond the school boundaries by involving the community surrounding the schools.
That is the new challenge for the 88 students and teachers from 8 different schools that were selected to participate in this year programme. Read more>>

Workshop on Best Management Practices for Sustainable Peatland Management
|
Recently, our Peatland Programme team in collaboration with Lembaga Pengkajian, Pendidikan dan Pelatihan Lingkungan Hidup (LP3LH), Indonesia conducted a technical workshop entitled: ‘Technical Workshop on Best Management Practices of Sustainable Peatland Management’, on 15th – 18th June 2011 in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.This workshop is one of the key activities of the ASEAN Peatland Forests Project (funded by IFAD & GEF) and Sustainable Management of Peatland Forests in Southeast Asia (SEApeat) Project (funded by the European Union) to build capacity for sustainable peatland management in Southeast Asia by promoting and showcasing best management practices at the regional level. 40th GEF Council Meeting

About 40 representatives from the GEF NGO Network attended the 40th GEF Council Meeting which was held in Washington DC from 23 - 26 May 2011. The meeting was a milestone for CSOs as their input during this meeting has made significant impact on the proposed GEF's standards on Environment and Social Safeguards and Gender Mainstreaming. Significant development was also made on the proposed GEF's policy on Indigenous Peoples with input from representatives from indigeneous peoples. Read more >>

Sahabat Hutan Bakau Kuala Gula
|
Located in in the mangrove coastal of Perak, Kuala Gula is mangrove ecosystem which encompasses a multitude of habitats including the buffer areas of rivers and its tributaries, mangroves island and mangrove coastal forests. It is an importance area for fishing activities which is the main livelihood sources in Kuala Gula. The mudflat and the swampy areas of the Kuala Gula mangroves have been the place of stopover and feeding for various species of migratory and resident birds.

MENGO Green Hunt 2011

It keeps green, green and green – that was the tagline for MENGO Green Hunt 2011 which was held on June 25th, 2011 at The Weld Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Seventeen civil society organisations working on sustainable development and environmental conservation known as Malaysian Environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (MENGO) organised the Green Hunt in conjunction with their 10th anniversary celebration. The Green Hunt was held for the third time and Global Environment Centre (GEC), as one of the members of MENGO, contributed to the success of the event. Read more>>
