Hi everyone!
It’s already the second quarter of 2013; how time flies! The year started slowly, then gained momentum as we got past the merry-making of the Chinese New Year festivities. World Wetlands Day fell on February 2 and the International Day of Forests fell on March 21. GEC did our bit in celebrating these important days on the environmental calendar. Read on to see what we’ve been up to in the first quarter of 2013.

River Care Programme : SMART Ranger ToT at Kg Kemensah
On 6th February 2013, 32 participants from Kg Kemensah, Taman Melawati, and Taman Keramat took part in a workshop on resource management and river monitoring. Aside from indoor slide shows, there was a practical session at the river. There was also a series of soap and candle making from used cooking oil demonstration, a step by step on how to do composting and fruit enzyme.

World Wetlands Day 2013
The World Wetlands Day was held on 23rd February at Parit 6, Raja Musa Forest Reserve. 400 volunteers took part in the half day event which was officiated by the Selangor State EXCO for Tourism and Environment, Ms. Elizabeth Wong.
Among the highlights of the day was the fire-fighting demonstration by the Fire & Rescue Department and tree-planting in the rehabilitation area. This time, 2 canal blocks were also constructed to better manage the hydrology of the forest reserve.

Mangrove nursery management training at Kuala Gula.
- A training session was held from 8th to 10th March 2013 in Kuala Gula, Perak for 10 representatives from Kg Dato' Hormat, Sabak Bernam, Selangor in preparation for a similar mangrove rehabilitation project in their village. Organised in collaboration with Sahabat Hutan Bakau, its objective is to demonstrate and share skills related to community nursery establishment and management.

GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Cambodia
This workshop for South, North-East and South-East Asia region was held on 19 – 21 March 2013 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Attended by more than 100 participants, the workshop provided participants with knowledge of GEF-5 strategies, programs, policies, and procedures. On Day 3, Mr. Faizal Parish also led a regional CSO meeting which discussed a range of issues relating to the development and implementation of GEF projects and programmes in the region. River Care Programme Now Helping to Protect Marine Biodiversity
In a six month programme that is running from January to June 2013, the River Care team will be assisting the Department of Marine Parks in the conserving marine biodiversity through enhanced marine park management and inclusive sustainable island development programme.
Through this programme, students and teachers on 3 islands, Pulau Tioman, Redang and Sibu; will be exposed to issues faced by their rivers, to change behaviors and habits which are polluting their water catchment and rivers. The project will educate the schoolchildren and encourage awareness and stewardship of their river.

Launch of APFP-SEApeat Media Awards
The APFP-SEApeat “Peat for Life” Media Awards was launched in conjunction on the World Forestry Day on 23rd March 2013. Open to all press and new media articles published in ASEAN countries, nominations will close on 31st December 2013. Articles can be in any language but must be accompanied by its English translation.

Sungai Klang - My Living River Photo Contest
A photo contest was launched on 24th April 2013 under the River of Life Public Outreach Programme to create awareness among the general public on the beauty and importance of the Klang River. Open to all walks of life, there is RM10,000 worth of prizes to be won.

Farewell Mr Chee!
As of February 2013, our much loved mentor and Programme Manager, Mr Chee Tong Yiew has retired to spend more time with his wife and family. We bid him adieu and wish him well as he takes the opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.
